The AsiaLink Objective
“With Multinationals ruling the global scene, there seems to be a need for local agencies, and there are a very few left, to have some kind of “support system”, even if this is only for better fellowship. The support could be for new business, for exchange of information or staff, or simply being and staying “connected” with what others are doing in the region and indeed the globe. It could also be that one of the partners has an answer to a particular question or concern the other may have.
Partners should look upon AsiaLink as a means to keep their current clients happy. How this can be achieved? By belonging to an international grouping with associates in all the major capitals of Asia, Europe and the U.S. A partner now has access to information that may be needed by a client. This could be simply how the client's category is doing in other parts of Asia , to what are specific competitors doing in the region.
One partner was able to get creative reels from a few partners in the region to use as a reference in coming up with its own creative strategy for its client. The client was shown the creative approach of other countries and was impressed. In another case, a partner was able to show a client how a would-be competitor in its country launched a product in a neighboring country. Again, client was very appreciative.
AsiaLink is an excellent vehicle to train, retrain and give key staff and achieve a "mind opening" by exposing them to the way agencies and creatives work across borders. There are many possibilities here. In one case, there will be an exchange of creative staff between two partners for a four-week period. In another, one partner who have a slow period will be able to send two staff to another partner for a few months. The receiving partner will pay their salaries for the period. Or three partners will send some of their staff to a formal training session of another partner.
Relatedly, AsiaLink is a good vehicle for partners to hire new staff. Skills one partner needs may be available in another partner's country.
AsiaLink is a means to assist select clients that may want to expand abroad. Clients get the unique opportunity to have a friendly face—the owner himself—of a partner agency to welcome and service the account. Sooner or later, a partner will have an existing or a new client that wants to sell abroad. With the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) now a reality, the intensity of cross border requirements of clients will intensify as soon as business begins to pick up. Relatedly, a partner can use another partner's country as a production base, as Guam has been doing in the Philippines .
The three AsiaLink propositions
A) A support system for local agencies : With Multinationals ruling the global scene, there seems to be a need for local agencies, and there are a very few left, to have some kind of “support system”, even if this is only for better fellowship. The support could be for new business, for exchange of information or staff, or simply being and staying “connected” with what others are doing in the region and indeed the globe. It could also be that one of the partners has an answer to a particular question or concern the other may have.
B) We are totally driven by “ what's in it for the owner of the local agency ”. That's YOU . Meaning AsiaLink decisions are by the owners and for the owners. For example, we have few rules, we accept those who might be other wise belong to other networks – so long as it serves the interest of the owners. If here is an offer to buy one of the members, we let you know. We might lose a member, but we gain a friend.
C) We keep dues, rules and obligations to a minimum : It's YOUR networking and contacts that we are building – not ours. No dues till you have attended the first meeting and like what you see.
Partner's Criteria
Our criteria are fairly simple. The associate or partner should be reputable and have the capability to service cross-border business, respond to inquiries speedily provided these are not complicated and hopefully will sometimes be the source of business. What we do is invite potential members to our annual meeting and listen to the credentials. It's a very informal and friendly meeting which gives both a chance to see whether we like each other and can work together.
Types of Members
Partners are the senior members, the moving, driving force. They pay full dues, and can vote.
Associates are members who are aligned with AsiaLink, attend meetings and share all benefits, except rights to vote
Friends do not pay dues but from long association can be called upon to open the right doors and give the good advice.
